Where Fashion & Music Converge

This past Monday, I (Hilary Greene) was able to attend an amazing event in Boston. Karmaloop & eMuze banded together with On The Verge: Boston to put on a display of young up and coming talent. 8 designers from the area and 4 musical artists presenteed there work in front of six amazing judges. Mark Miller, Gretchen Monohan, Jon Platt, Michael Schlow, Greg Selkoe (CEO and founder of Karmaloop) and Terri Stanley all scorred not only the designers but also the models. The competition was simple, but the prize is once in a life time. The winning designer would have their line carried on Karmaloop.com and the models were competing for a one-year contract with one of Boston’s top modeling agencies, Maggie’s Modling of Boston. And every good show needs a host right? Grammy nominated Clinton Sparks, a native to Boston, returned to help out with this amazing event.

But what about the fashion?

while each designer had their own unique style and tailoring skills, my favorite collection was by Ava Hashemi, a student at the School of Fashion and Desighn.

Hashemi (middle) utilized archetecural designs and beautiful soft tones, with great gold detailing and fethers. my favorite desighn was the long green skirt and cream top. the skirt had amazing movement and the top had an open slit in the back, a popular and elegant trend this spring. Hashemi did win the competion, and i can’t wait to see her designs on Karmaloop.com!

The winning models were LaToya Brahm and William Palma, both did an amazing job, and fit the Karmaloop image perfectly.

Musical Preformances from Missy Model, De-Lor, Aziz and Radical Something broke up the night, and each had a unique style and clearly amazing talent. My favorite was De-Lor, a four person band whose amazing vocals and powerful guitar had a new and appealing sound.

The Finale by Radical Something was a party, with their upbeat music and good time feel.

The show was an amazing experience, drinks were on the house and fashion (both on stage and on those who attended) was on point. I can’t wait for next years show!

Ombre Nails

Hollywood made a big splash in the past year with the trend of Ombre Hair. And as we passed on to 2012 it seems that the fashion world is not done with ombre yet. This time it’s coming in the form of nail polish and it’s the perfect glam, flirty, retro, or cool addition to the spring time trend. Do you have a any fun ombre nail designs that you are dying to try out this spring?

Polyvore Post: Everyday Neon

Neon is hot this season, and it makes sense. It’s fun, it adds some spunk to any outfit, and most importantly, it’s cute! It can be hard to not go overboard and look like you’re ready for a frat party, so when it comes to neon, a little goes a long way. Pops of color in shoes, bags, and other accessories can be the perfect way to wear this trend.

For my first outfit, I wanted to use neon in a way that would be appropriate for class or hanging out with friends during the day. The boyfriend jeans are casual, give off a relaxed vibe, yet at the same time they’re chic too. The grey cardigan is simple, comfortable, but has an asymmetrical cut to add some depth. The cropped graphic tee adds some personality, but maintains the muted color scheme, allowing the neon bag and oxford soles to pop. I love that the oxfords are nude on top with just a hint of playfulness on the bottom.

For the second outfit, I couldn’t choose between using the absolutely gorgeous shoes for a day setting, such as a formal brunch, or pairing them with a LBD for a night out. In the end, I just did both! The white paisley dress on the left is feminine with a high neckline but also has a flirty, form-fitting cut, and the nude bag is a simple accessory that’s practical but cute. On the right, the LBD is tight, but still flattering for all body types because of the full skirt. The cut-outs are hot, show a bit of skin and so the higher neck compensates. Add a bold statement necklace, a sleek black clutch, smoky eyes, and you’re ready. With both of these outfits, the shoes are the pièce de résistance.  They’re loud, fun, but still incredibly versatile.

Fashion Week: London Recap

London fashion week sparkled with colors and lively fabrics that created a sharp contrast between the city and the countryside. Christopher Bailey of Burberry Prorsum seemed to favor the fields over the city and truly re-established an emotional warmth that has been lacking in the recent fall seasons. Mathew Williamson’s collection like Williamson himself dreamed of the sun and shyed away from most fall/winter patterns and colors with shimmer, sequins, and bright patterns and colors making his models look like superheroines about the attend the year’s biggest ball. Mulberry reminded us of a luxurious Disney World, glossy yet fun with teddy bear coats and tiger prints. And not to mention the brilliant collection of McQ by Alexander McQueen, the first McQ show to grace London in many years made quite a theatrical return. Sarah Burton offered up khaki colorblocked coats, embellished velvet frocks, and fantastical tulle and flower confections on a runway strewn with autumnal leaves and a set complete with a wintery forest. “ A love of style, a love of McQueen and a love of great British style – from military coats to overblown ball gowns” the show notes explained and it certainly was.

Dresses to Class?! It’s Really Just as Easy as Jeans

Fashion is about more than the physical clothes itself.  Fashion creates an impression of you before you even open your mouth to speak.  It screams: this is me this is who I am. Some people like to switch up what they wear, while some are comfortable in the same things, day after day, year after year.  Whatever kind of fashionista you choose to be, everyone has that one trend by which they can be recognized. This style identifier is different for every single person. For some it’s colored jeans; for others its button downs and Sperry’s.  Mine is dresses. I wear a dress three to five times a week and rock it a different way every time.  People are happy in their own identifier and may be intimidated by other peoples since they are not as comfortable with it. For me, it’s mixing prints. I don’t know how to go about doing that without looking like I got dressed in the dark and honestly I just avoid it at all costs (someone PLEASE teach me how to do this since I’m dying to know). Many people avoid my fashion identifier. They don’t want to look over dressed or too fancy, and have people ask them all day “you look nice, what’s the occasion,” which I admit has happened to me multiple times.  My goal however is to teach people how to make my style identifier a part of their wardrobe. There is no better feeling than having that girl whose style YOU admire, compliment you on your outfit, or let’s be honest, seeing that hot boy from your gb214 class and knowing you look good.  There are a few simple rules I follow that will guide you through implementing this trend into your wardrobe:

1. Stay away from super tight low cut dresses by themselves. You don’t want to look like you are going out on the town on a Friday night. If you are desperate to wear that new bodycon you just snagged a deal on from LF then MAKE SURE to pair it with a blazer and tights or a long flowy sweater. It is vital that it is paired with something that covers that fact that’s its fitting like a second skin, that’s a no-no for going to class.

2. Tights are your best friend. Patterned, colored or just plain black, whichever you prefer, make sure you have some tights and while you’re at it have a variety too. Pairing tights with a dress makes it look less going out and more so flirty and fun. Patterned tights are a personal favorite. It creates a casual feel, and allows you to totally change up a simple dress. If you’re bold, wear a patterned dress with patterned tights!

3. Blazers are so in right now. It snags some of the attention away from the dress (if it’s the right one of course) and allows you to get away with wearing the same casual black dress you wore last week. No one will know that the dress you are pairing with a bright green jacket is the same one that you wore an oversized sweater with last week.  Talk about versatile!

4. Invest in some belts, any color, any size (I prefer big chunky ones, but skinny belts will serve the same purpose). They cut the outfit in half, somewhat tricking the eye into thinking that there are two different pieces, one top and one bottom.  If you’re like me who has a love affair with the color black, it also allows a pop of color. In addition they make your waist look smaller, making the dress more flattering (talk about a win win-win)!

5.  Layer, Layer, Layer.  Wearing a dress on its own is always fine, but adding some pizazz to your outfit just makes it even better. Wear a fur vest, blazer, cardigan, sweater, wrap shirt… basically whatever your heart desires over the top of your dress. It totally changes the whole look of the outfit and in some cases makes it so it doesn’t even look like a dress, just a skirt and a top. This is a way to express yourself and way to wear your favorite tie shirt without having to wear it with just jeans.  Mix it up, show your personal style and stray from the traditional!

6. Don’t be afraid! The fear of looking over dressed is one reason people stay away from dresses but the other is that it is so hard to get up in the morning and resist those comfy sweatpants and sweatshirt for a day full of grueling classes. But hello, it is a top and bottom ATTACHED. No matching involved no squeezing into jeans and trying to find a cute shirt all the way in the back of your drawer. Pull on the dress, grab a blazer and tights, maybe some jewelry and bam… done.  Takes a total of about 5 minutes for a days’ worth of looking put together and attractive… trust me it’s worth it.

So take my word for it, dresses are your friend! There are a million ways to wear them and a million ways to accessorize. Don’t be timid, rock your stuff! Take one week and wear a different dress (or even the same dress in a totally different way) and see how you feel, I promise the confidence and compliments will ensue!

Fashion Week: NYC Recap

What a crazy whirlwind of fashion presented at New York Fashion Week. The fall/winter collections were absolutely exquisite, playing with color blocking and geometric shapes. And who can forget the fierce Alexander Wang show where Gisele herself closed the show. Beyond the femme fatale fierceness presented by the tribal collection of Michael Kors and the edgy Alexander Wang, another theme was obvious on the catwalk. Feminine and Romantic. From Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte, Vera Wang, and Zac Posen, light airy fabrics in feminine silhouettes and colors covered each model on the catwalk. What a wonderful celebration to being a woman! Newbies Victoria Beckham, Rachel Zoe, and Whitney Port stunned with their new collections and Calvin Klein could not end the show in any better way! And last but not least, my two favorite collections of the whole week, BCBG MaxAzria and Herve Leger. Beautiful color blocking, amazing shapes and silhouettes and not to mention the killer shoes and waist belts at Herve Leger. Sexy, sophisticated, feminine and chic!
